Researchers at our Center are designing closed-loop neural-interactive systems that help restore function and mobility. Closed-loop is a feedback loop - when you pick up an egg or squeeze a tube of toothpaste, your brain makes adjustments based on feedback. Squeeze that tube too hard, or hold that egg too tightly, and you’ll have a mess on your hands. But if your brain uses the feedback correctly, you’ll hold that delicate egg just fine.
What is “sensorimotor”? The word itself is an adjective, it is used mainly in neuroscience and it means having to do with both sensory and motor functions. You have five senses: Sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch. Motor skills are what make you move, and that happens when your brain, nervous system and muscles work together.
